Choosing the Right Magnification for Your Practice
May 23, 2026

A practical guide to picking a magnification level that matches the procedures you do most.
Choosing the Right Magnification
When you first pick up dental loupes, the magnification number on the box can feel like the most important spec — but it is only one of several factors that determine whether a pair of loupes will actually feel comfortable through a full day of procedures.
Common ranges
- 2.5x – 3.5x — great for general dentistry, hygiene, full-mouth views
- 4.0x – 5.0x — endodontics, fine restorative work
- 5.5x+ — micro-procedures, surgical work
Field of view trade-off
Higher magnification narrows the field of view. Many clinicians underestimate how much of their normal scanning behavior they lose at 5x and above.
